{"id":174,"date":"2007-09-21T01:08:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-21T01:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"\/lisa\/post\/2007\/09\/21\/The-only-acronym-that-really-counts.aspx"},"modified":"2007-09-21T01:08:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-21T01:08:00","slug":"the-only-acronym-that-really-counts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacefold.com\/lisa\/2007\/09\/21\/the-only-acronym-that-really-counts\/","title":{"rendered":"The only acronym that really counts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nIt&#39;s been another grinding week, as Enterprise Application Brand X lurches out and Enterprise Application Brand Y <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Butler_Yeats\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"He said it, I didn't\" rel=\"noopener\">slouches towards Bethlehem<\/a>.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI choose that&nbsp;allusion deliberately; sad to say, the execs really do treat this like the Second Coming, while the hamsters wonder why this wheel is&#8230; even&#8230; harder to turn&#8230; than the last&#8230;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSo C and I&nbsp;took a look at the UI the hamsters are going to have to use for&nbsp;data entry&nbsp;next month. Auditing their training is the closest we are apparently going to get to having a good look at the&nbsp;schema we&#39;ll be manipulating in the New Order.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSigh. When we left the training room, C remarked &quot;that would be best thing ever, if this was 20 years ago and it was written in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/slideshow_viewer\/0,1205,l=&amp;s=26705&amp;a=196169&amp;po=4,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Peter Coffee article on dBase II\" rel=\"noopener\">dBase II<\/a>.&quot;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd yes, friends, the&nbsp;mid-frame DB2&nbsp;app that is being installed (and coded!) right now does look almost exactly like the dBase II app in the Peter Coffee article to which I&#39;ve just linked.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAt this tired and dispirited moment&nbsp;I want to pause in my code-heavy&nbsp;and&nbsp;technique-oriented postings of late. I want to pay tribute to an important concept closely aligned to something <a href=\"\/lisa\/2007\/08\/14\/Vista-and-the-Managed-Developer-and-more-mgmt-musings\/\" title=\"Productivity posting\">I&#39;ve&nbsp;mentioned&nbsp;before on the subject of developer productivity<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;as <em>the right tool for the job<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\tLBJ took the IRT <br \/>\n\tDown to 4th Street USA <br \/>\n\tWhen he got there <br \/>\n\tWhat did he see? <br \/>\n\tThe youth of America on LSD <br \/>\n\tLBJ IRT USA LSD LSD LBJ FBI CIA FBI CIA LSD LBJ &#8230;\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSometimes I think back to the 60s musical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robinsweb.com\/60s\/hair_lyrics.html#Initials\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"HAIR-Initial lyrics\" rel=\"noopener\">Hair<\/a>&nbsp;and I realize nobody would even think&nbsp;this song sounded odd these days. The song&#39;s name is &quot;Initials&quot;, BTW.&nbsp; We didn&#39;t even talk about &quot;acronyms&quot; then. We&#39;re drowning in a sea of them now.\n<\/p>\n<h4>Alphabet soup comes out of a can<\/h4>\n<p>\nI&#39;m a RAD\/JAD programmer by inclination. &nbsp;I care deeply about SQL and even more deeply about OOP.&nbsp;I love REST and SOAP almost equally, I work with XML, XSLT, and probably a hundred other standards known only by&nbsp;their letters.
