{"id":118,"date":"2008-11-09T16:21:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-09T16:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"\/lisa\/post\/2008\/11\/09\/Request-to-the-Fox-Community.aspx"},"modified":"2021-08-30T14:07:41","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T21:07:41","slug":"request-to-the-fox-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacefold.com\/lisa\/2008\/11\/09\/request-to-the-fox-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Request to the Fox Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Hey FoxFolks,<\/h5>\n<p>I get lots of really nice feedback when I post walkthroughs on SQL Server Reporting Services stuff here, and I also get some generally-useful suggestions for new walkthroughs and similar stuff that I can post for the RS community, if I have information to share.<\/p>\n<p>From the VFP community, I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t even get any opinions on which of the\u00a0unfinished\u00a0<a title=\"TMM TOC\" href=\"\/articles\/tmm\/\">TMM articles<\/a> I should prioritize.<\/p>\n<p>I occasionally get a request e-mail to share some Fox\u00a0information <em>privately<\/em>.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t do that.\u00a0 Even when I used to be a consultant to VFP developers, I couldn&#8217;t do that; my rule was always &#8220;I&#8217;ll help you publicly for free, or you gotta hire me.&#8221;\u00a0 You can surely see why.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the situation is even worse, although the reasons why might not be as obvious (that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m posting about it!).\u00a0 I have very limited time to do this, and whatever information I supply has got to help everybody equally and help other folks down-the-line who don&#8217;t happen to know me personally and might need it.<\/p>\n<h5>What I can do<\/h5>\n<p>We all know the documentation for VFP Reporting did not get updated at all in SP1, and it\u00a0was not properly updated in SP2.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the reason for <a title=\"TMM Origin Story post\" href=\"\/lisa\/2007\/10\/17\/What-LSN-was-Not-Allowed-to-Do-What-LSN-Plans-to-Do-About-It-Now-and-What-You-and-I-Will-Never-Call-It\/\">the TMM project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve posted my idea of &#8220;what was missing&#8221; in the <a title=\"TMM TOC\" href=\"\/articles\/TMM\/Default.aspx\">TOC for TMM<\/a>; if you think there are items there that should be top priority for me, because you need the information immediately, don&#8217;t hesitate to let me know.\u00a0 If you think that there are items <em>missing<\/em> there, likewise.<\/p>\n<p>Before I stopped my initial push on TMM content, BTW, I completed <em>all<\/em> the topics that were absolutely critical in my own opinion, and felt comfortable stopping there.\u00a0 &#8220;Absolutely critical&#8221; means: with that set completed, and with <a title=\"Spacefold article index page\" href=\"\/articles\/\">the\u00a0related session papers\u00a0that we put together<\/a>\u00a0as Spacefold articles, there is no secret knowledge, there is no huge gap, as far as I know.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that set of already-completed topics, I&#8217;m really stuck for any idea of what you need.<\/p>\n<h5>What I can&#8217;t do<\/h5>\n<p>But don&#8217;t ask me to share the information with you privately as a favor, it ain&#8217;t fair to me or your fellow Fox developers, IMHO.\u00a0 Even if you plan to share the information with other developers, you still shouldn&#8217;t ask me to give it to you privately.<\/p>\n<p>There are no issues regarding MS restrictions on this information any more, so that&#8217;s no excuse.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want anybody misinformed on <em>that<\/em> subject, either.<\/p>\n<p>And consider\u00a0how <a title=\"post about VFPX\" href=\"\/lisa\/2008\/03\/01\/Reporting-Apps-CodePlexVFPX-and-You\/\">VFP Reporting is moving on<\/a>, so you think about ways that you and others can contribute to both this process, and the documentation of this process, by working on it on <a title=\"VFPX CodePlex Home\" href=\"http:\/\/www.codeplex.com\/VFPX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CodePlex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>None of this information belongs to me, and none of this work belongs to me, either.\u00a0 The only part in it I still have is some pride in an accomplishment, which I hope is justifiable.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I\u00a0get some additional satisfaction in elaborating on the details of that accomplishment, which is\u00a0one reason\u00a0I&#8217;m happy to work on walkthroughs or TMM posts to share with everyone, if you indicate that it will be of any use.<\/p>\n<p>I <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> get the same satisfaction out of writing a private e-mail and then watching somebody else publish the insights.\u00a0 Maybe that&#8217;s petty, but there it is.\u00a0 It&#8217;s how I feel.<\/p>\n<h5>What I&#8217;ve already done<\/h5>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be surprised if I send you to the documentation first &lt;g&gt;.\u00a0\u00a0There&#8217;s a lot already there. If I send you there and it still doesn&#8217;t answer your question, I really will be happy to oblige, probably with a TMM page.<\/p>\n<h5>What else I can do<\/h5>\n<p>Some folks may remember that I have other connections to the VFP Xbase in-the-box code base, and other insights to share about Fox, beyond reporting.\u00a0 These are still available to you, although I think you have plenty of other VFP-oriented resources eager to help you, on many of these topics.<\/p>\n<p>Either way. If there&#8217;s something non-reporting I&#8217;ve written about in the past, or something about VFP Reporting through the VFP 9 SP2 period that you need, don&#8217;t be a stranger.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t write Fox articles &#8220;in mid air&#8221; anymore. But if there&#8217;s something that I know is needed, I&#8217;ll do my best to help, time permitting, and I&#8217;ll do it publicly.
